Can you guess the classic from it’s cover?

The pictures below are all covers of classics that we know and love, but can you guess which is which?

You should know all of the books, but the covers get more obscure as you go down the list.

I’ll give you the answers next Friday, and a few clues along the way if no-one can is getting close.

Answers now available here.
It’s just for fun, but GOOD LUCK!

  1. Violet says:

The D one is War and Peace

  2. mee says:

You know, a lot of them could go for Wuthering Heights lol.

  3. Beth F says:

This is very fun. I’m really bad at these kinds of games, so I’m going to be a bystander — but I love this idea.

  4. Claire says:

    Oh, so hard!

A- hmmm, Tess of the D’Urbervilles?
    B- Wuthering Heights?
    C- Bleak House (or Rebecca?)
D- War and Peace or Les Miserables?
E- Pretty sure this is Vanity Fair
F- Les Grandes Meaulnes or Frankenstein?
    G- no idea

  5. Jackie says:

Good guesses! There are a few correct answers in there – but a lot of wrong ones too!

  6. Trish says:

    A. The first one looks like a James Fennimore Cooper book, but Last of the Mohicans doesn’t sound right.
    B. Moby Dick?
    C. Bleak House
    D. The people are so little my poor eyes can’t see.
    E. Holy Cow these are getting hard!
    F. Snow of Kilamangaro?
    G. Big House on the Prairie?

Wow, that was really tough. Kudos to anyone who gets them all!

  7. Rikki says:

    A. and B. both either Hardy or Bronte
    C. Bleak House
    D. War and Peace
    E. I don’t think it’s Vanity Fair, Claire
    F. Thus spoke Zarathustra
    G. no clue either

  8. sari says:

Wish I could come up with at least one. You picked some stumpers:)

  9. Gavin says:

    What fun!

A – Far From the Madding Crowd – Hardy

    B- The Moonstone – Collins

    C – Bleak House – Dickens

    D – War and Peace – Tolstoy

    E – Pride and Prejudice – Austin

    F – Frankenstein – Shelly

    G – ?

  10. Becky says:

    F is Frankenstein.
    C is Bleak House.
I think A is Wuthering Heights. I’m almost positive it’s a Bronte something because I own that book cover.

  11. Jackie says:

Some of you are getting very close!

I can see you are struggling with G. Let me tell you that the cover has NOTHING to do with the contents of the book (as far a I know) It is a children’s classic, so just guess away!

  12. G – Anne of Green Gables??
E – A Georgette Heyer (or P&P) are my guesses.

  13. Claire says:

A- One of Anne Bronte’s novels?
    G- Anne of Green Gables?

  14. Christina says:

    E is Pride and Prejudice.
    F is Frankenstein.

  15. Dorte H says:

F is definitely Frankenstein. Being a Danish reader is not exactly an advantage, however. I may know some of them with other covers.

  16. JoAnn says:

    These are hard, Jackie!
    A and B – Brontes / Hardy
    C – Bleak House
    D – War and Peace
    E, F, G – ???
    Even the clue doesn’t help.

  17. Kerrie says:

I’ll go with Gavin – hers look right :-)

  18. claire says:

    A: Wuthering Heights
    C: Bleak House

Those are the only two I know for sure. :)

  19. Jackie says:

I think you’ve just about worked it out, apart from G.

Can you think of a book which has nothing to do with a house in the middle of the land?

  20. Sorry, this is the wrong place to put this, but it’s better than a book review. Anyhoooo, I’ve been given an award, which I’d like to forward on to you. Love reading your blog – think we read a fair few books that are similar/on similar lists, as well as, your blog’s extremely informative, as well as packed with great links! Thank you.

You can pick it up fromhere? Thanks!

  21. Melody says:

    This is fun!
I’m not sure about the rest… but my guess for cover E is Pride and Prejudice from Jane Austen??

  22. Linda says:

Oh, great choice for the quiz! I couldn’t guess a one!

  23. Wild guess G: Moby Dick.

  24. Petunia says:

How fun! Too bad I don’t have a clue about a single one of them. I’ll be watching for the answer to G.

  25. Jackie says:

Terri – Amazingly close! Not correct, but you are on the right lines!

  26. Claire says:

    G- To Kill a Mockingbird?

  27. Jackie says:

    G- To Kill a Mockingbird?

    Getting colder!

  28. Claire says:

    G – Little Women or Charlotte’s Web?

  29. Jackie says:

    G – Little Women or Charlotte’s Web?

I’m sure you’ll get there soon, but you need to head back in the Moby Dick direction.

    Thanks for trying!!!

  30. Claire says:

Last tries – The Last of the Mohicans

    Call of the Wild

  31. Jackie says:

Claire – No – I’m afraid those guesses are far too dry…..

  32. Claire says:

    Huckleberry Finn!

  33. Jackie says:

    Huckleberry Finn!

I’m afraid not, although it is a coming of age story too.
Think Huckleberry Finn with added sea and sand.

  34. Claire says:

    Robinson Crusoe or Treasure Island?

I am determined to guess this!

  35. Jackie says:

    Treasure Island!!

I knew you’d get there eventually!!

I couldn’t believe it when I saw that cover – it doesn’t reflect Treasure Island at all! All the others have treasure and pirates on the front.

I really should read it now. I had a quick look on the Internet and it sounds like a great story.

  36. Claire says:

Phew! non-reflective of the story, indeed (I read it at school many years ago). I would not have guessed it at all, if not for the clues!
