Persephone reading week begins!

Claire from Paperback Reader and Verity from The B Files are hosting
Persephone Reading Week.

They are encouraging people to read as many of these special grey books as possible in the next seven days. They have come up with some great quizzes and have several Persephone books to give away.

Please head over to their blogs and help them to celebrate the books from this special publisher.

I have to admit that I have never read any Peresphone books before. This event has encouraged me to take a few off the shelves and give them a try. The timing isn’t great as I am still trying to get through all the Bookers before the short list is announced, but I will do my best to squeeze a few in.

Tonight I am going to read The Victoria Chaise – Longue by Marghanita Laski. It sounds scary!

I’m really looking forward to reading it and will hopefully be able to tell you all about it tomorrow.

Are you a fan of Persephone books?

Which is your favourite?

Thanks for the post, Jackie.

I am treating this week as a break from the Bookers although I was intending to read mine for the winner announcement, not the shortlist; you should be fine though as you have read so many already.

Nymeth read The Victorian Chaise-Longue in little over and hour this morning, loved it, and reviewed it so you have that to look forward to once you have also read it! It’s a thrilling little gem of a novel and I hope you enjoy it.

As for my favourite … a post about that will appear midweek! To quote Danielle from A Work in Progress, “I’ve yet to meet a Persephone that I didn’t like”.

I do admit to chosing to read The Victorian Chaise-Longue because it is so short! I am pleased to hear it only takes an hour to read – I may be able to squeeze another one in at that rate!

I just read about this review over at Nymeth’s blog and it sounds like a good one! I can’t wait to hear your thoughts on it… I should have been more on the ball and participated in this reading collaboration. Oh well, maybe next year!

I’m pleased to hear that it sounds good – I’m avoiding her review until I’ve finished it!

I am planning to read the shortest one I could find! If the Bookers go well I might squeeze another one in at the end of the week. I almost have those Bookers under control now!

I loved the Victorian Chaise-Longue – it was genuinely pretty claustrophobically scary. ‘Miss Pettigrew lives for a day’ is wonderful in contrast – a frothy cinderella tale.

I only heard of them quite recently, but I think they are a very English thing. I’m very pleased to have discovered them!

I did enjoy it and am tempted to find more books by Marghanita Laski. I’m pleased to hear that you enjoy her too!

I think they are a very English thing! I am pleased that Persephone reading week is raising awareness of these once forgotten books.

I have been reading abt this Persephone reading week, but honestly I don’t even know what they are. How sad is that? I’ll go look into the challenge. All the best with yours.
