Booking Through Thursday – The Worst ‘Best’ Book

btt button

“What’s the worst ‘best’ book you’ve ever read — the one everyone says is so great, but you can’t figure out why?”

There are two books that stick out for me:

Out Stealing Horses was almost universally raved about, not only by people on Amazon, but also many of my most trusted blogging friends. I was really looking forward to reading it, but was very disappointed. There were a few good scenes in the book, but for the majority of it I was really bored.

I also seem to get irritated by all Mitch Albom books. They are overly sentimental, and just seem like one long lecture on appreciating your mother, (in the case of For One More Day) or various other members of your family/friends (all his other books). Everyone else seems to love them, but they are just far too fluffy and obvious for me.

I recommend you read these book though, as I think I am just about the only person on the planet who has these opinions!

I loved Out Stealing Horses but I do think it’s a book to read at the right stage of life and in the right frame of mind. I have heard similar views on Mitch Albourn before so definitely an author struck off my list now.

Out Stealing Horses didn’t appeal to me so I didn’t read it.

Same with Albom. I get his point (have seen numerous interviews) but don’t need/want to read his books.

My BTT is up.

Wow! I didn’t know there were so many people out there who don’t like Albom! Thank you all for stopping here for the first time!

Simon – It is silly, but I know what you mean! I only read it, as it was recommended so many times – I’m not a horsey person either!

I feel the same way about the Nicholas Sparks books. The rest of the world obviously loves him, and the books are very readable. But they are pretty sappy, and I always feel like I’ve been manipulated after I read them, and I don’t like that!

I’ve never read Stealing Horses but I am currently reading The Five People You Meet in Heaven and find it thought provoking and touching. However, I am closer toward heaven than you are, meaning I’m much older. Somehow the thought of it is comforting.

Margot – I haven’t read that one, so can’t really comment, I just find the ones I’ve read overly sentimental. I think I’m in the minority though, and I’m pleased you find it comforting.

I always thought Mitch Albom’s books are supermarket pocketbooks at best. Out Stealing Horses is well written but not plot-driven. I forgot what it’s about already!

My pick for this week is Da Vinci Code. It doesn’t have any competitor. The literary blunders and infelicities just confound me.
