Booking Through Thursday – The Best Book You’ve Never Read

btt button

This week’s Booking Through Thursday question is:

We’ve all seen the lists, we’ve all thought, “I should really read that someday,” but for all of us, there are still books on “The List” that we haven’t actually gotten around to reading. Even though we know they’re fabulous. Even though we know that we’ll like them. Or that we’ll learn from them. Or just that they’re supposed to be worthy. We just … haven’t gotten around to them yet.

What’s the best book that YOU haven’t read yet?

I don’t like reading all the books by my favourite authors at once, as I like to savour  them. Sometimes, when I go through a stage of reading a few bad books in a row, I like to know that I can pick up a book knowing it will be great. These are a few of the books I’m most looking forward to reading:
  •  Half of a Yellow Sun – Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie
  • The God of Small Things – Arundhati Roy
  • The Post Birthday World – Lionel Shriver
  • The Night Watch – Sarah Waters
  • Outlander – Diana Gabaldon

I’m also really intrigued by The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo by Stieg Larsson and Twilight by Stephenie Meyer, but I’m not convinced they will be in the same league.

Do you think I’ll enjoy all of the books in my list, or is there one lurking there that will not live up to my expectations?

I’d love to hear from you!

Beth – I’m trying to! You can see it is number 3 in my TBR list, but other things keep getting in the way. I somehow ended up saying I’d join in with the Gone with the Wind read along, so I have that chunkster to read first, but I prominse I’ll read Outlander very soon!

You’ve a great list there, Jackie!
I really want to read The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo because I’ve read so many good reviews about it!

The Twilight series is not bad too, although I’ve to say the first installment remains my favourite.

A great list! It would be hard to pick my favourite out of the ones of I have read although I absolutely love The God Of Small Things – have read this one twice. The Night Watch and Half of a Yellow Sun are also fantastic reads. I am one of those rare people who have not enjoyed Twilight at all but I am glad I did read it in the end so I could join in the conversations. I’m also waiting to pick up a copy of The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo from my library.

I have to say that I think The God of Small Things is a very good book, I was puzzled as to whether I loved it or hated it at first (this is happening with Netherland) but after spending time away from it think its a masterpiece.

Half a Yellow Sun is simply breath taking, The Night Watch is very good, havent read the other two!

Well, you know how I feel about Outlander. It is a commitment, but one you will be proud to be married to! The Twilight Series for me was a little bit of a letdown. The first was the best, in my humble opinion, however you can read these books so fast, it isn’t all that much time spent. I figured I had to read what the rest of the world was going ape over!

I have so darned many books that will be on The List forever. For ever book I read, I put ten on the list. It makes me nuts.

I forgot about Half of a Yellow Sun! It’s in my pile so I can get to it soon. I couldn’t get through The God of Small Things after two attempts.

I’ve got so many but when I reflect upon the type of writing style that appeals me the most, I narrow it down to a short list.

At first I couldn’t make of the question because it really depends on what best is. I’m reading a very popular book that I’m probably the last person on earth to read it. Gone with the Wind. 🙂

I’ve read the whole Twilight series and enjoyed them (not so much the last one, sadly). They are surprisingly well-written and are a bit of brain candy, but not mindnumbingly stupid. I have Outlander on Mt. TBR but haven’t cracked the spine yet.

Matt – you’re not the last person – I’m reading Gone with the Wind too! I think there are lots of people who won’t have read it yet – it is so long!

Netherland’s good, albeit in my opinion, the gist is slightly misleading. It’s well-written and interesting though.

Not sure about Shriver – absolutely loved We Need To Talk About Kevin, but then there was Double Fault which I found difficult to finish.

For me, the best book never read is ‘Gone With The Wind’. Thinking about it, haven’t read the ‘Lord of the Rings’ trilogy either.

uncertainprinciples – I’m disappointed to hear Double Fault wasn’t any good. I loved We Need to Talk About Kevin, and was hoping all of her books would be good. I’ve heard good things about Post Birthday World, so I’m still looking forward to that one, but I’ve got Double Fault here. Perhaps I’ll have to read it soon, just to see!
